Heyya Farfetched!

Interesting! For me, getting to a bridge at this point would seem nearly deus ex machina. Nothing revealed about the technology supports the capability of the lens to create a bridge... (Nevermind that bit about the capability of both the powder or the lens being entirely undefined; which allows for "anything possible").

Still, I'm pleased that it appears well received; I'm whipping out some fairly unexplainable/unsubstantiated components here and there, and the suspension of disbelief seems to not fall apart.

Ahhhh the shopkeeper. You know, I hadn't considered him, frankly. It does bug me to leave logic threads open, but I sent him packing with nary a tear shed, didn't I? We can gather that he moved along for whatever reason, probably nothing magical, since the new homeowner was aware of it having been a shop, but with no indication of time passing, how long had it been, in fact? Did she move in that rapidly, and remain this unaware of the prior tenant? Seems like no more than a few days have passed, judging by our time with Jeremy and Cora... doesn't add up, entirely.

The more I think about him, though, the more I think he knows more than he's let us in on...

Heh — I too was expecting a bridge. It just seemed like the story was pointing that way, beginning with Jeremy's cold-banked hatred of the island on which they were trapped. I still enjoyed the story though; stories are about people and that part you worked very well.

Yes… and whatever *did* happen to the shopkeeper? It seems his only purpose was to deliver that orb to Jeremy. If you do expand this story, that's a mystery that will have to be probed.

Hi Helen!
Thanks for taking the time to read and to comment so thoughtfully.

I'm really amazed by this "bridge ending" concept. Seems that the story is leading up to just such a thing, and not delivering. I wonder what it is about either the tale or the desire that makes the "bridge ending" so compelling.

Is it that this island is unbearably desolate to the reader? Are we so empathetic to Jeremy and Cora that we cannot abide them being there without some deliverance?

I admit that I'm fond of the open ending; I think it walks away on a note of hope and possibilities, but, yes, by design, it does not provide resolution, and maybe it's just a simple resolve is all that we need to have for Jeremy and Cora.

Yes, this ties directly (if not evidently) to the Trial and Error series (as well as The Rim, if you recall). All my stories are set it the same world with the same technology and shared global events, but at this early stage, it's not always clear where the puzzle pieces fit. Hoping, over time, I will be able to paint all the connections in a meaningful way for the reader. Pleased that you made that connection!

"...leads to a world worse than theirs..." Ah Yes!! Yes indeed. There's room in this world for just such things, precisely.

I agree with John X this does have a fairy tale quality about it. I liked how you portrayed Jeremy's excitement when he finds the nanogin lens. That little bit of mystery when the shop disappears..... but like John, I too found the ending disappointing, I thought as well that they would use the nanogin lens to cross the black powder sea, maybe even form a permanent bridge so that the others could escape the island.

I did like the world you created, I kept wondering what this black powerder stuff was, (it reminded me a little of the serial you were writing with the white powder the boys were mining).

This is a good story, but I think you need to make the ending stronger in some way, perhaps even give it a twist, maybe they do form a bridge but it leads to a world that worse than theirs - now there's a thought! ^__^

Thanks for the compliments and considered comments, John.

You're not the first to mention the bridge idea specifically. It crossed my mind, but something made me feel like that would not be a direct instruction the lens would be capable of, without further training or deployment.

Thanks for saying it's got legs; that means alot, and I think you're right. I can see this developing once the village becomes aware and wakes up like Cora did. Cora probably gets the inkling that the lens can be decoded/reprogrammed towards further ends; not excluding travel.

Much appreciated!

I really like this.

It has a fairytale feel, with the language and the wondersome object from the mysteriously vanishing merchant. It's definitely a different take to the usual post-apocalyptic fare too, and not just because of the nanopocalypse itself rather than zombies/ virus/ nuclear/ meteoroid.

The only thing I found strange was the reaction of the nanogin lens in the powder sea not being followed through in any way. It strikes me that there is the opportunity for a bridge between islands. The ending felt a little hollow for me because of this. I like that they want to share the wonderment with the other villagers, but it seemed like something was missing. I know you ran well over your original intended wordcount, but I think it has legs to go further... maybe a sequel or maybe you can squeeze a novella out of this..? If you have the time. =)

All very plausible, I would assert. The point of sci-fi, to me, is to present scenarios which raise just such questions. Sounds like this is right on track! Thanks for these comments, very much appreciated.

I should have paid more attention to the title. I read it w/o the title at first. As I was reading, I was thinking hard-core sci-fi all the way up until the end, when the little girl ate the nano. Had you intended to make this into more of a "magical" princess-type (for severe lack of a better descriptive term) story? Or more along the lines of Peter Pan, and never "growing up?" Is the girl out of touch with the harsh realities of her world, or accepting of them, and just really focused on the "magical" and happy things all around her? Or, is she in the process of transitioning from the former to the latter, as she grows up under the influence of the nano? Does the nano store and retrieve her memories, and interject them at various points of despair? Or actually alter her thought processes (with subroutine-like execution)? Ok. Ok. Is nano like DNA-like (self sustaining) or RNA-like (a string of instructions depending on a host, and not so influential on it's own)... bacterial-like vs. viral-like??? Do you get my line of thinking here... very hard to describe... What a blend of genre's we have here. Sci-fi meets, Peter Pan.

I should have paid more attention to the title. I read it w/o the title at first. As I was reading, I was thinking hard-core sci-fi all the way up until the end, when the little girl ate the nano. Had you intended to make this into more of a “magical” princess-type (for severe lack of a better descriptive term) story? Or more along the lines of Peter Pan, and never “growing up?” Is the girl out of touch with the harsh realities of her world, or accepting of them, and just really focused on the “magical” and happy things all around her? Or, is she in the process of transitioning from the former to the latter, as she grows up under the influence of the nano? Does the nano store and retrieve her memories, and interject them at various points of despair? Or actually alter her thought processes (with subroutine-like execution)? Ok. Ok.
Ohhhh. Totally different than I had imagined. Since you had mentioned in the story an ability to "determine the rightness and wrongness of objectives," my thoughts were lead in the direction of a thought battle... of consciousnesses, of ideals, of ethics, of whatever... a search for an "algorithm" of sorts, to help the mesh to evaluate situations that it comes into contact with for overall "rightness" or "wrongness" defined from the nano's perspecitve. With the story eventually developing into some grand satire of the conflicts of our modern day, yet played out with a ridulous sampling of nano-environmental and social issues.

Hey you! Welcome to my stories. Lots of great questions there! Which ending to you like better? I left it open by choice; I like the idea of setting up the scenario of this, then leaving it to the reader to play with. To me? It's an instruction bot, with no instructions left. It was built to mesh with others, then formulate a plan, so, perhaps once inside the girl, it adopts programming from its environment, and runs with that. I don't foresee either of them communicating to each other, but I do see the particle capturing the magic that children see, the way they see it, and reflecting it back to her for her whole life. Maybe she grows up and never forgets the importance of the small things?

You, my brother, are a very gifted writer. Now that nano has "meshed" with the little girl, does he revert back to his original instructions? Has the little girl lost her ability to self-direct? Or will this be a cooperative effort, with both beings keeping their abilities, and fighting a battle of conciousness in each and every situation?

Thanks for saying so! Drabbles are a challenge in that way, and I'm cheating, too, by referencing gods with no detail; but which I'm working on elsewhere. MEANWHILE I seriously have to embrace that whole "finish what you start", thing. I've got only about half of my pantheon of gods written up. I need to finish those up proper, so I can use them in stories and actually have reference material for the reader.

Thanks Li! Same here; it seemed like all the fiction I was encountering that dealt with nano took a very horror angle. I think there's vast space to discuss nano in many other ways. Very exciting element to work with! I hope you do revisit your story, please come back and link me when you do, I'd love to read it.

The secret life of nanomachines? This was really interesting, the way you describe weather processes from the PoV of a nanochine… and what's going to happen now that a little girl has swallowed it? Fascinating stuff.

Thanks! The more I read it, the more I find holes to fill. At least 5 things I'd change now. Ahwell! The nonsense words were a result of just going with the flow. I think the only requirement for the challenge was just the subject of revenge.

Twas brillig and the slithy toves... I mean, twas brilliant! Very nice use of nonsense words! I got a real sense of the story even though I didn't understand what half the words meant. Was that part of the challenge?

Seems like I've dropped into a series midway, however, I'm intrigued by the premise. The concept of the tones has me thinking Dark Crystal amongst other things. I'll be out and around to read more eps.

The thing was this: We were planning on going to Paris. So, in my crazy head, I'm thinking "Gosh, what if I LOSE my wedding band while I'm overseas? I should take it off now, put it somewhere safe!" I did that. Somewhere very safe. No idea where that might be now..... Been looking for it for years.

Ha ha no wonder this was doing your head in! :D I think you are very funny and I have a big smile on my face now Reginald! I was thinking how creative of him to want to trace this all back.

I loved reading your 7 things about you - I disagree about Macs though they are fab and I only use a Mac so there - blows raspberry.....

Hey I was interested in you losing your wedding band, both my husband and I lost ours just after our 35th Anniversary, strange eh, now idea where they have gone - of course I made him buy me another one ;)

I chose your blog because I truly love reading what you write!

Mmmm tasty! Writing this was frustrating, because I want to explain more of the why's and wherefore's here. Might have to revisit this in larger pieces.

Thanks John! Yeah, I'm no fan of gore for the sake of gore. If it's an element in a comedy piece, or an element in a horror piece, fine, as long as it relates to something with purpose. This was fun to try, and I think I like the stolen smile concept here, and the gore is a necessary result. I might do more drabble, but not in place of the other; these feel too quick and gone to be satisfying (I suppose, unless, you're doing these en masse for another purpose, ala Jake Bible).

I am definitely intrigued by this world and the nanogin machines that seem to be protecting the zombies' bodies. What starts the "mutation" and why does it choose to modify bone growth? Would the nanogin's possibly disrupt/change other parts of a person? Perhaps enhancing vision etc? Does everyone in the world have some type of nanogin machines inside them?

Sorry for all the questions! I love stories that tickle my imagination. :) Great job!

Excellent zombie horror, I particularly like the stray from the zombie norm, the speech and interaction, also the intriguing details of the Nanogins and the bone growths.

Armoured, thinking, co-operating zombies... a truly terrifying thought!

I typically avoid gruesome, but, this time, I felt it was needed to understand that these zombies 1) do what they do without much hesitation and 2) aren't limited in their diets. To me, that ups the ante on what's terrifying about this species.

Ahhh Crennyn. Are we supposed to connect with the monsters? Couldn't resist that angle.
